No matter how much you do, physical activity is good for your body and mind. Adults should aim to be active every day. Some is good – more is better still.

Being active is good for your mind and body. Every minute of activity counts – and the more you do, the more you'll benefit.

Exercise can:

  • improve your sleep
  • clear your mind
  • boost your energy
  • help with back or joint pain

Exercise can also reduce your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer's disease and some cancers.

Make a start today – it's never too late!

The key to a healthy diet is to eat the right amount of calories for how active you are so you balance the energy you consume with the energy you use.

If you eat or drink more than your body needs, you'll put on weight because the energy you do not use is stored as fat. If you eat and drink too little, you'll lose weight.

You should also eat a wide range of foods to make sure you're getting a balanced diet and your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs.

People with special dietary needs or a medical condition should ask their doctor or a registered dietitian for advice.

Healthy ageing is also about having the capabilities that enable all people to be and do what they have reason to value. This can include a person’s ability to:

  • meet their basic needs
  • learn, grow and make decisions
  • be mobile
  • build and maintain relationships and
  • contribute and feel part of your local community.

Healthy ageing means making choices that help you stay independent for longer. Some lifestyle choices that influence your health include:

  • How and when you exercise
  • Who you surround yourself with
  • How much you enjoy your home
  • How you use and challenge your brain and
  • How you think and feel about your life.
